Small Earthquakes Hits Arkansas County, Dallas Area

November 3, 2008

Federal officials say a 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck on Nov. 1 near the community of Magnet Cove in Hot Spring County, Arkansas.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the earthquake hit three miles northeast of Rockport and five miles north-northeast of Malvern at 9 p.m. The USGS says the earthquake started about 3.1 miles underground.

Residents in Hot Spring County reported feeling their homes shake and hearing something that sounded like an explosion. Renee Preslar, a spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, says there were no immediate reports of damage after the quake.

Preslar says maps of the area show no fault lines. She said it was rare for residents to feel an earthquake of its size.

Another 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook parts of North Texas, but no significant damage was immediately reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake, reported at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 31, was centered in an area about 10 miles west of Dallas.

The federal agency also says the impact area was about 20 miles east-northeast of Fort Worth.

An April 7 earthquake in South Texas had a 3.7 magnitude.
