The number of work-related fatalities in 2013 in Louisiana declined to 114, according to a preliminary count by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in its Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) reported.
The figure was down slightly from the revised total of 116 in 2012. Industries reporting the most fatalities in 2013 were trade, transportation and utilities with 37, construction with 17, natural resources and mining with 15, professional and business services with 14, manufacturing with 11 and government with nine.
Non-fatal injuries and illnesses in Louisiana had improved to their lowest level in a decade in 2012, according to a separate BLS survey released last November. Louisiana ranked second in the nation in 2012 for rate of non-fatal injuries and illnesses.
LWC’s Office of Workers’ Compensation collects data about workplace fatalities in partnership with the BLS. Data on 2013 non-fatal injuries and illnesses will be released in November.
