Democrat Weldin Stewart Elected Delaware Commissioner

November 16, 2008

Democrat Karen Weldin Stewart, who has experience working with insurance companies in receivership, rolled to victory in the race to be Delaware’s next insurance commissioner.

She defeated Republican John F. Brady, 56.9 percent to 41 percent in the final tally.

This was her third run for the insurance post.

Weldin Stewart succeeds Democrat Matt Denn, who won his bid for lieutenant governor.

The former state insurance department deputy receiver had surprised many political observers by winning the Democratic primary over Gene Reed Jr., the candidate backed by the Democratic Party establishment.

During her campaign, she promised to push for legislation that would prohibit insurance company executives and insurance company PACs from contributing to the insurance commissioner candidates.

She also stressed her experience as the deputy insurance commissioner in charge of receiverships. She is a Certified Insurance Receiver.

Stood Up

“I stood up to some of the largest insurance companies in the world, collecting millions of dollars for the benefit of Delaware policy holders. Policy holders who would have received only 3 cents to 10 cents on the dollar by the insurance companies, often, under my administration, received 100 cents on the dollar,” she said during the campaign.

She is a past president of the International Association of Insurance Receivers and she has worked with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to help write model legislation for all states to adopt.
