Corps Study Seeks Solution to Flooding in Alabama County

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking at solutions to the persistent problem of flooding in Jefferson County near downtown Birmingham, Ala.

WBMA-TV reports that a three-year study by the agency will look at multiple options.

County Commission President Jimmie Stephens says engineers have already discussed constructing retention ponds, dredging creek beds and buying some of the most vulnerable homes along the banks.

The final solution could include all three options.

Stephens estimates a total cost for a solution at as much as $15 million, which would be covered by a combination of federal and local money.

Valley Creek regularly floods in areas including Bessemer, Hueytown and Brighton. Rescue crews recently had to remove people from their homes near the creek because of high water.
