Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company (FFIC) fulfilled a $1 million pledge to the firefighting community in San Diego County for equipment, fire prevention tools, firefighter training and community fire safety education. The company awarded 15 grants, totaling $200,000, to area fire departments. In September, the company issued a Request for Proposal to all fire departments in the county. These proposals were then evaluated by a group of local FFIC employees who determined the final grant recipients, which included: Boulevard Fire & Rescue Dept. Inc., Campo Fire and Rescue Dept., Carlsbad Fire Dept., De Luz Volunteer Fire Dept., Deer Springs Fire Protection District, Encinitas Fire Dept., Imperial Beach Fire Dept., Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District, La Mesa Fire Dept., Lemon Grove Fire Dept., Mount Laguna Volunteer Fire Dept., Inc., Oceanside Fire Dept., Ramona Fire Dept., Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District and San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District. This is the second round of funding that FFIC has awarded to fire departments in San Diego County. In April 2004, FFIC awarded 16 grants totaling more than $500,000 through a similar process. FFIC and Clear Channel Communications also announced results of an online “Call to Action.” Donations of $10,000 apiece were awarded to: Mount Laguna Volunteer Fire Dept., San Pasqual Volunteer Fire Dept., Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District, Alpine Fire Protection District and Bonita Sunnyside Fire Protection District.
