The elaborately decorated Mardi Gras coconuts that are traditionally handed to New Orleans parade-watchers by the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club have survived reported threats by the insurance industry for this year. Louisiana Commissioner of Insurance Robert Wooley is apparently to thank for helping to keep the tradition alive.
The Associated Press reported the risk that someone might get hurt by a wayward tropical fruit was causing the Zulu’s insurance premium to triple, so the Zulu krewe went to Wooley for help. The commissioner reportedly helped the group find a policy with a manageable premium increase. The weight of the coconuts is apparently a problem, so the Zulus are exploring ways to lighten the coconuts’ load.
