N.Y.’s Operation Goldbrick III Leads to 11 Workers’ Comp Fraud Arrests

May 9, 2001

Acting Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio, the Suffolk County District Attorney James M. Catterson Jr., and New York State Insurance Fraud Executive Director Henry Neal Conolly announced the arrest of 11 individuals in a wide-ranging insurance fraud sweep.

It is alleged that the individuals charged systematically defrauded the insurance system in ways ranging from receiving benefits to which they were not entitled, to fraudulently representing they were eligible for insurance coverage that they were not, and/or fraudulently representing they were covered by insurance when they were not.

Investigators from the Suffolk District Attorney’s White Collar Crime Bureau made the initial arrests and indicated that were continuing efforts to arrest several individuals who had reneged on promises to surrender.

All of the defendants were arraigned in First District Court, Central Islip and released on their own recognizance. The maximum penalty for the crimes charged is four years in state prison.
