New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg along with more than 30 mayors and town supervisors throughout the state have proclaimed June 27 as Insurance Fraud Prevention Day in support of the efforts of The New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud (NYAAIF).
“Insurance Fraud Prevention Day provides an excellent platform to create greater recognition of the fraud problem here, urge citizens to learn more about it, and learn how not to become entrapped in an insurance fraud scheme,” NYAAIF Chairman Tom Sullivan said. “We are greatly appreciative of the acknowledgement of this problem by so many officials throughout the state.”
Insurance Fraud Prevention Day, piloted in New York City in 2006, is one of several programs the Alliance coordinates to educate New Yorkers about insurance fraud. The organization, which is supported by insurers, encourages residents to call 1.888.FRAUD.NY to report fraud or visit a newly created, interactive website, www.fraudny.com, to obtain information.
The tagline of the campaign – Insurance fraud: the crime you pay for – highlights the cost to consumers of this pervasive problem.
The Alliance has also implemented a public relations program and will soon release data gathered from a multi-market insurance fraud attitude survey.
In addition to the state, communities proclaiming Insurance Fraud Prevention Day include: Albany, Amherst, Auburn, Binghamton, Brookhaven, Buffalo, Catskill, Cortland, Elmira, Geneva, Gloversville, Hornell, Kingston, Lockport, Massena, Mount Vernon, New York, Oneida, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, Saranac Lake, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, Smithtown, Tonawanda, Troy, Utica, Watkins Glen, Waterloo and White Plains.
