Some families in Virginia whose homes were built with suspect drywall from China may be eligible for assistance to help rehabilitate their properties.
To qualify, families must have insurance through the Federal Housing Administration.
Charles Famuliner, director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Richmond office, says FHA lenders are being instructed to temporarily suspend or reduce mortgage payments to help families replace the drywall.
They also are being encouraged to forgo late fees or give borrowers extra time to make overdue payments.
More than 2,360 homeowners in 35 states and the District of Columbia have complained the drywall made them sick and corroded wiring throughout their homes.
