The Justice Department has agreed to pay $2.3 million to a couple who claimed inadequate care at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center caused their child to be born with neurological damage.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that a federal judge approved the settlement between the Justice Department and Scott and Michelle Holweger.
The Virginia couple filed a $15 million medical malpractice lawsuit against the federal government last year. The government admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement and denied any malpractice.
According to the settlement order, $1.57 million will go into a trust fund set up to care for the child. The Holwegers’ attorneys will receive about $675,000 in fees and expenses, and $54,000 will go toward medical bills.
