A jury has awarded a Maine student $300,000 in a lawsuit she filed against a nursing school that expelled her after she complained of sexual harassment by a male instructor.
The InterCoast Career Institute, a California-based school that operated a program in South Portland, dismissed Aimee Helwig of Standish in 2008 for violating its code of conduct.
Helwig said her complaint that the school discriminated against her. Helwig was expelled about a week after the school was notified that she had filed a complaint about the instructor with the Maine Human Rights Commission.
Court records show the school dismissed the instructor in 2008 on the grounds that it no longer had a position for him.
The school declined to comment.
