Erie Insurance Arena is drawing rave reviews after reopening following a $47 million renovation that includes more seats, luxury boxes, wider concourses, new locker rooms and other improvments.
The Erie Times-News reports about 600 people attended a private grand opening party Tuesday night.
The venue once known as the Tullio Arena, opened in 1983 and cost $9.3 million to build. Renovations began in December 2011.
The building houses concerts, and sports events and is home to the Erie Otters, a team in the major-junior Ontario Hockey League; the Erie Explosion of the Continental Indoor Football League; and the Erie Bayhawks in the NBA’s Developmental League.
Concert seating has increased from 7,500 to 9,000, hockey seating from 5,500 to 6,500 and basketball seating from 5,600 to 6,600.
The first event is an Otters game Oct. 5.
