State officials in Massachusetts are urging drone owners to fly responsibly this holiday season.
The state Department of Transportation released suggested guidelines for operating the small, unmanned aircrafts this week.
They say drones should not be flown over populated areas, sporting events or private properties. Drones should only be flown up to 400 feet high, during daytime hours, in good weather and within eyesight.
Owners should also contact airport officials if they plan on operating one within five miles of an airport. Jeff DeCarlo, head of the DOT’s Aeronautics Division, says drones can cause serious injury or damage property if not handled properly.
The Federal Aviation Administration estimates over a million drones will be sold this holiday season. The authority requires all drones weighing over 0.55 pounds be registered.
