High water and downed trees are blocking roads and tens of thousands of people are without power as southeastern Virginia cleans up after Hurricane Matthew’s heavy rain and winds.
Dominion Virginia Power says more than 100,000 customers in Virginia are in the dark Monday morning, most of them in southeastern Virginia. Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach declared states of emergency Sunday. The Virginia National Guard staged about 160 soldiers in the Hampton Roads area Sunday.
Some school systems already planned to be closed Monday for Columbus Day, but others announced they would close Monday because of power outages and impassable roads.
Department of Transportation officials say a large sinkhole opened up on Route 58 in Pittsylvania County on Saturday. It could take up to a week to reopen.
