For some neighborhoods in Virginia Beach, the long recovery from flooding caused by Hurricane Matthew is just beginning.
On Saturday, emergency management crews and other officials toured several communities where homes were damaged.
Virginia Beach emergency manager Erin Sutton says the teams saw more than 600 homes, and about 100 sustained major damage. Some had more than a foot of water inside. Many homeowners whose property was damaged did not have flood insurance.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that residents spent the weekend clearing out ruined furniture and other personal items from their homes and dumping them on front lawns.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe toured the area earlier last week and said he’s certain the city sustained more than $11 million worth of damage. That’s the threshold for requesting federal aid.
