President Joe Biden has signed a disaster declaration for damage caused by storms that hit the southern Vermont counties of Windham and Bennington at the end of July, the office of Vermont Governor Phil Scott said Wednesday.
The presidential declaration comes after officials identified more than $5 million in damage to public infrastructure from the storms on July 29 and 30.
With the disaster status, communities are eligible to receive 75% reimbursement for storm response and recovery. Those costs include repairs to public roads, bridges, and other infrastructure that was damaged.
“We’re grateful for the help coming our way, as it will significantly lessen the financial impact of this storm on towns in Bennington and Windham counties,” Scott said in a statement.
Previously awarded hazard mitigation funding coupled with the new disaster declaration will make it possible for affected communities to protect against future damage, the state said.
“This is the time for towns to think big and make lasting changes to public infrastructure that will protect lives and cut the cost of future disaster recovery,” said Vermont Emergency Management Director Erica Bornemann.
