Joy Y. Hatchette has been named deputy commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA).
Acting Maryland Insurance Commissioner Marie Grant announced the appointment of Hatchette, who since 2004, has served as the associate commissioner for consumer education and advocacy. She was responsible for outreach to Maryland consumers over their rights and obligations under their insurance policies.
From July to September this year, Hatchette served as interim commissioner of the MIA, overseeing the agency during the search for a new insurance commissioner.
Previously, Hatchette served as associate commissioner for consumer complaints from 1997 to 2004 and from 1993 until 1997 as an assistant attorney general for the MIA.
From 1988 to 1993, she was an associate in the law offices of Gordon, Feinblatt, Rothman, Hoffberger and Hollander. For two years prior to that, she served as a judicial law clerk for the US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
In 2016, Hatchette was appointed to the Maryland Commission on Aging and served two four-year terms.
She is a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and is a member of the bar associations in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
