Crews Work to Contain Diesel Fuel Spill in Baltimore Harbor

June 6, 2025

State, city and U.S. Coast Guard crews of more than 100 people worked overnight to contain and clean up a 2,000-gallon diesel fuel spill in Baltimore’s harbor.

On Wednesday at 11 a.m., first responders received what Johns Hopkins Hospital believed to be a 200-gallon leak at a facility in East Baltimore. That was followed by a 911 call at 12:58 p.m. in which the hospital reported that the source was a spill at a marina in Harbor East more than a mile away, officials said. By evening, it was estimated the spill involved 2,000 gallons.

Officials reported last night that the spill had been contained in the marina at the South Central Avenue Bridge in Harbor East.

Officials said there is no impact to drinking water in the area. The water is red due to dye in the diesel fuel.

The Coast Guard is working with contractor Miller Environmental Group on cleanup efforts, using oil absorbent materials and skimmers feeding into a 4,000-gallon pump truck. The state and city have been working to get additional contractors to the site to aid in the response.

The Coast Guard is in charge of command and is actively investigating the scene. The public is asked to stay clear from the area in an effort to help responders on scene.

The city expects continued traffic pattern disruptions well into Friday and encourages motorists to use alternate routes away from this area in Harbor East.
