In a letter addressed to Chairman Lawrence Eagleburger, Dr. Eric J. Fischer, Secretary General of the Dutch Association of Insurers, asked that the trade organization become a participant in the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims (ICHEC). Eagleburger will now consider the request, and if he gives his consent it will be presented to the other members for approval.
The action indicates a renewed willingness on the part of Dutch insurers to re-examine claims made on pre-World War II policies, many of which have never been paid. It also opens the way for more favorable treatment of Dutch insurers, such as ING and Aegon, by state insurance commissioners and legal departments, who have been threatening various actions against Dutch insurers unless they joined the commission and undertook to investigate the “Holocaust Claims.”
The association represents over 300 Dutch insurers, and has pledged its full cooperation in investigating claims made by the ICHEC, and to abide by the decisions it makes.
