According to a report in the Associated Press fugitive financier Martin Frankel attempted to escape from the German prison where he is awaiting extradition to the U.S. by sawing through the bars of his cell. Alerted by a security camera, prison guards intervened, and Frankel was moved to another facility.
Frankel, who faces charges of defrauding insurance companies of over $200 million in five states, will have served half of his three year sentence in Germany for carrying false passports and smuggling diamonds, and German authorities agreed in December to send him back to the U.S. this month.
Apparently arrangements were already in progress to return Frankel to Connecticut to face charges, which prompted the escape attempt. Prison officials said the event wouldn’t cause any delays in handing him over to U.S. authorities.
