Typhoon Nabi roared ashore on Japan’s Southern Island of Kyushu. So far the storm has caused at least one confirmed death; 16 people are reported missing and 23 have reportedly been injured.
Nabi is packing winds of around 90 mph (144 kph), but the relatively slow moving storm has already dropped over 32 inches (81 cms) of rain.
Authorities have ordered the evacuation of more than 100,000 people, and have put the entire island – which is home to around 12.7 million people, 10 percent of Japan’s population, on high alert.
All ferry services and airline flights have been cancelled. Local infrastructure is still in place, but authorities have warned of floods, landslides and possible power cuts.
Nabi’s projected path would take it up the West Coast of Japan, before heading west towards South Korea.
