Alan Jay Kaufman is bucking the business tide in Michigan. While many companies are retrenching their business, Kaufman is going global.
Kaufman, chairman, president and CEO of the national specialty insurance wholesaler H.W. Kaufman Financial Group/Burns & Wilcox, has formed a new business entity with London-based C.J. Coleman & Co.
The new venture, called Coleman and Kaufman Limited (C & K), will further expand Burns & Wilcox business in the worldwide London market. Presently, Burns & Wilcox is one of the largest providers of contract business to London. In addition, it is expanding its brokerage operations in the London market.
“It has always been my goal to build the H.W. Kaufman Financial Group toward a global organization. We are very excited about expanding our opportunities across the Atlantic, and throughout America and Canada,” Kaufman said.
He said C & K will support many classes of insurance placed in the London market and that will mean increased writing capabilities for clients.
The company posts a premium volume in excess of $750 million, making the H.W. Kaufman Financial Group the largest insurance wholesaler and broker in North America.
For Kaufman, a joint venture with C.J. Coleman & Co., a Lloyd’s of London broker, provides a logical step in worldwide expansion. C.J. Coleman & Co. has been associated with Burns & Wilcox for more than 30 years.
