Bermuda-based AXIS Capital Holdings Ltd. announced the launch of the “AXIS Re Actuarial Scholarship” in partnership with Renmin University in China.
The scholarship fund will provide financial assistance to actuarial students in Renmin’s School of Statistics to help develop their actuarial science skills and acumen and to promote professional training in actuarial sciences in the Asia-Pacific region, said AXIS in a statement.
At a recent ceremony at Renmin University, AXIS Re Asia Pacific Deputy Chief Underwriting Officer Les Loh and AXIS Vice President Tony Gu presented scholarships to five actuarial science students.
Commenting on the AXIS Re Actuarial Scholarship, Gu said, “We are proud to partner with Renmin University to provide scholarships to some of its most talented and deserving actuarial science students. These scholarships reflect our company’s commitment to helping to engage and cultivate the next generation of insurance and reinsurance professionals.”
“The actuarial sciences play a vital role within the insurance industry by enabling more advanced and accurate business analysis, risk modeling and, ultimately, decision making by underwriters,” said Richard Milner, president and chief underwriting officer, AXIS Re Asia Pacific.
“We look forward to continuing to work with Renmin University, as well as our other partners in the Asia Pacific region and throughout the world, to support the educational needs and advance the professional development of students who wish to pursue a career in insurance,” he added.
AXIS said its actuarial scholarship is representative of the company’s global commitment to developing the next generation of insurance professionals.
Recently, AXIS Re held a “Future of Insurance” student hackathon in partnership with the University of Illinois Office of Risk Management and Insurance Research, to help students explore how technology impacts insurance.
Additionally, AXIS Re Asia Pacific also sponsors the annual Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) Actuarial Scholarship in the region, as well as related actuarial seminars throughout the year, the company continued.
Renmin University is a public research university located in the Haidian District of Beijing, China, and is affiliated with several renowned universities around the world, including Columbia, Princeton and King’s College London. Its post-graduate actuarial science and risk management degree is considered among the highest-rated insurance-focused academic programs in China.
