Ohio Department to Join National Task Force

July 12, 2002

The Ohio Department of Insurance has accepted an invitation to join NeighborWorks® National Insurance Task Force (NITF) as part of its mission to expand its role to increase accessibility and affordability of insurance services to customers in lower-income neighborhoods and provide insurance related information to members of these communities. Ohio is one of four state insurance departments joining NITF.

“This is an opportunity for the Ohio Department of Insurance to help make insurance more accessible and affordable to the members of low-income communities,” Ohio Director Lee Covington said. “Becoming part of the National Insurance Task Force enables us to impact an even larger number of people in a positive way.”

NITF develops products and tools to create local partnerships between the insurance industry and community-based organizations. Through its involvement on a number of committees, the Ohio Insurance Department helps make available insurance services in low-income areas that show a need for such services.

The federally created Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, founder of the NeighborWorks Network, established The National Insurance Task Force in 1994. The NITF membership consists of leaders from community-based organizations and the insurance industry who have been brought together to improve the provision of property and casualty insurance in low and moderate-income. The task force includes representatives from the insurance industry’s top property and casualty carriers, insurance industry trade associations, insurance regulators, educational institutions, the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, and members of the national NeighborWorks Network.

The NITF mission is to develop partnerships between the insurance industry and community-based organizations to better market the products and services of both for the benefit of the customers and communities they serve.
