TheStreet.Com Names Gallagher CEO as Top Company Head

October 16, 2002

J. Patrick Gallagher, the current head of the Illinois-based broker that bears his name and was founded by his grandfather, heads the list of TheStreet.Com’s seven best U.S. CEO’s.

The Internet financial site decided that after all the bad publicity, and corporate shenanigans of a number of U.S. CEO’s it would conduct a search for the best. It whittled the list down to 97 companies, and eliminated those headed by their current CEO’s for less than five years.

The remainder fit a specific profile that the author of the report, Stephen Schurr, described as follows, “The majority are run by founders, scions of founders or people who worked their way up from the inside. The CEOs tended to have longer tenures. With a few notable exceptions, the list was free of high-profile CEOs. The companies also shared a disciplined culture that promoted from within.”

Gallagher was cited as first on the list. He’s been company president since 1990 and CEO since 1995, the third Gallagher to head the company in its 75 years of existence. The report noted that “During his tenure, the company has climbed from being the eighth-largest insurance brokerage in the world to the fourth. Arthur J. Gallagher has also smartly diversified into risk-management and financial services under Gallagher’s watch, in part through acquisitions.”
