After devastating floods in 2008, Cedar Falls, Iowa, enacted a new flood plain ordinance. And state officials are paying attention.
State Sen. Rob Hogg says what Cedar Falls has done shows great foresight.
Hogg is part of a group of legislators that’s pushing for a statewide law similar to the Cedar Falls ordinance.
Among other things, the Cedar Falls measure raises the level for base flood protection from the 500-year flood level to the 100-year mark. That move was the top recommendation from the Iowa Water Resources Coordinating Council.
Hogg says the momentum for strengthening flood protection is strong in Cedar Falls. He wants to make sure that drive continues.
About 3,900 homes and the downtown district were affected by the 2008 flooding.
