Indiana police agencies have issued almost no tickets to drivers younger than 18 for using cell phones since a ban on them using mobile devices while behind the wheel took effect a year ago.
Indiana State Police report ticketing only one driver for violating the cell phone ban, and a state agency that tracks infractions for 160 police departments could find just two other citations under the law that took effect in July 2009.
State police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten says departments can’t dedicate officers to watch for young-looking drivers.
State Rep. Vanessa Summers of Indianapolis says all drivers and not just teenagers shouldn’t be allowed to use cell phones without a hands-free device.
