Estimated 2010 storm losses in Kansas climbed to $220 million as of the end of August, according to the Kansas Department of Insurance. There were approximately 59,400 storm claims filed during that period. The highest number of claims so far this year were reported in June.
The department said estimated storm loss data consist of windstorm, tornado, and hail damage or other weather-related claim losses for insured real and personal property in Kansas reported for the calendar year and monthly during the calendar year.
Estimated flood losses and other insured perils are not included in the data. The data include only estimated storm losses reported at the request of the Insurance Commissioner by the private insurance companies selling and servicing property insurance coverage in Kansas.
Estimated storm loss data are collected from insurance companies, usually on a monthly basis and through special calls to report particularly significant tornado damage in cities, counties or other affected areas.
Storm loss claim estimates from the department are as follows:
| Month | No. Claims | Est. Storm Losses |
| April | 7,400 | $25,000,000 |
| May | 13,900 | $53,000,000 |
| June | 21,900 | $78,000,000 |
| July | 9,200 | $35,000,000 |
| August | 7,000 | $29,000,000 |
| Total | 59,400 | $220,000,000 |
