The Minnesota Supreme Court has agreed to hear the University of Minnesota’s appeal of a $1 million civil verdict against the school and men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith over the hiring of an assistant coach.
The court informed the school that it would hear the appeal last Wednesday.
In 2007, Jimmy Williams quit his job as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State because he believed Smith had offered him an assistant coaching job.
Minnesota withdrew the offer after they allegedly found Williams had NCAA violations during his previous stint as an assistant for the Golden Gophers more than 20 years ago.
Williams sued. Last year, a Hennepin County jury found Smith misrepresented his authority by offering Williams the job. The state appeals court upheld the verdict in October.
