Health officials want the Sioux Falls City Council to require home day care centers to carry at least $1 million in liability insurance.
It’s part of a package of rules the council are considering. It includes higher registration fees and a requirement that day care operators tell parents if the city cites them for any violations.
South Dakota doesn’t require day cares to register if they care for a dozen children or fewer. The proposed rules would require day cares to pay a $125 annual fee if they’re not registered with the state. State registered centers would pay $25 a year.
City Council member Dean Karsky tells the Sioux Falls Argus Leader the insurance could cost a day care operator $1,100 a year.
