The National Weather Service has confirmed that a rare tornado touched down last week in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
WLUC-TV and The Mining Journal of Marquette report the weak tornado touched down Friday in northwest Marquette County. No injuries were reported.
The weather service estimated the tornado traveled as far as eight miles and was as wide as 200 feet, with wind speeds of up to 95 mph.
The determination came after the weather service surveyed the area for damage, which mostly was to trees and included the Eagle Mine site.
Weather officials say the Upper Peninsula typically gets about one tornado a year.
