Arson Registry Compromise Clears Ohio Legislature

Convicted arsonists in Ohio would be required to register with local sheriffs under a bill headed to the governor’s desk.

Gov. John Kasich plans to sign it.

The legislation creates a statewide registry of arsonists and requires them to register annually with the sheriff in the county where they live. That would apply to people convicted of arson in Ohio or elsewhere.

Supporters say the measure could help deter repeat arsons, reduce damage and save lives.

Registration fees would fund the registry with convicted arsonists paying $50 initially and then $25 each year to register again.

Under the legislative compromise, the registry would not be a public record.

The news release from the Ohio House had incorrectly announced on Nov. 28 that the bill was headed to the governor.
