14 Insurers File to Be on Michigan Health Exchange

June 10, 2013

Fourteen health insurance companies have filed to offer plans through a new Michigan insurance market being created under the federal health care law.

The state Department of Insurance and Financial Services says it received filing information from 13 insurers wanting sell in the individual market on Michigan’s exchange. Eleven offered plans to sell in the small group market for businesses and other employers.

Enrollment to buy insurance on federally run exchange begins Oct. 1, with coverage kicking in Jan. 1. The exchange will determine people’s eligibility for Medicaid and whether they qualify for income-based aid to help pay their premiums for a private plan.

The state anticipates premium rates will be made public on Oct. 1.
