A federal lawsuit filed by the parents of a 14-year-old southwest Missouri boy who killed himself after being bullied at school has been settled for $300,000.
The Joplin Globe reports the Carl Junction School District and its insurance company settled the case on July 13 with Mika and Jessica Nugent, whose son committed suicide in March 2013.
The Nugents had claimed district officials failed to protect their son from bullying. They say he was harassed after he came out as bisexual while attending Carl Junction Junior High School as a seventh-grader, and that the bullying took place both at school and on the school bus.
District Superintendent Phillip Cook says new tools are in place that allow students to report bullying, including a new online reporting system that started in January.
