An imprisoned Ohio cardiologist has been ordered to repay $5.5 million to people on whom he performed unnecessary heart procedures as part of a medical overbilling scheme.
Cleveland.com reports that a federal judge ordered Dr. Harry Persaud to pay his victims before insurance companies are reimbursed. Persaud received a 20-year sentence last year after a jury in Cleveland convicted him of health care fraud, making false statements and money laundering. He’s appealed his conviction.
U.S. District Court Judge Donald Nugent ordered Persaud to liquidate a $4.7 million trust he established in his wife’s name.
Prosecutors say Persaud billed Medicare and private insurers for more expensive procedures than were performed, falsified stress tests to justify unnecessary heart catheterizations and referred patients for heart bypasses they didn’t need.
