Employee Accused of Stealing from Nebraska Insurance Agency Fined $400

A woman accused of stealing from a Beatrice, Neb., insurance agency has been fined $400.

Gage County Court records say Nicole Nelson paid the fine; the 45-year-old had pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor theft charge.

She originally was charged with felony theft. The Beatrice Daily Sun reported that defense attorney Benjamin Murray said during a hearing that initial reports of how much money Nelson had stolen from Penner Insurance were severely exaggerated.

Nelson had admitted to an investigator that she made false entries in the books to cover payroll advances. She was terminated, and she wrote a letter of apology to the company.

Following Nelson’s termination, it was alleged that one of Penner Insurance’s accounts had a discrepancy of more than $112,000 from January 2012 through 2019. According to Murray, authorities now think the money was never actually taken from the account.
