An Iowa man was sentenced in March after pleading guilty to one count of Theft 3rd Degree (Aggravated Misdemeanor) following an investigation by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau.
Khalil Justin Crawley, age 22, of Waterloo was sentenced on March 22.
The investigation began in March 2023 after the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau received information indicating Crawley provided false information in support of an insurance loss claim and received monetary benefits to which he would have not otherwise been entitled.
The investigation determined that Crawley and a passenger were involved in a single vehicle roll over crash that resulted in severe damage to the vehicle as well as bodily injury to both occupants of the vehicle. Crawley reported to the insurer that he was driving the vehicle when the loss occurred and that the vehicle slid on ice before going into a ditch. The insurer paid $10,895 in insurance benefits to Crawley before discovering that Crawley was eluding a police officer and operating the vehicle in a reckless manner resulting in the crash. Crawley was arrested on November 5, 2023.
Crawley was sentenced to probation for a period of one to two years. Crawley was also ordered to pay a civil penalty of $855 as well as restitution.
