Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announced her bid to run for Governor of Kansas in 2026.
Schmidt, a lifelong Republican, began her career as a pharmacist after graduating from the University of Kansas. She has worked for over 40 years as a local pharmacist. She served Shawnee and Wabaunsee counties in the Kansas Senate for 14 years.
In November 2018 Schmidt was elected Kansas Insurance Commissioner. She was re-elected in 2022 with the largest vote total statewide of any candidate for statewide office. Schmidt is the only pharmacist in America currently holding elected statewide office.
In a statement announcing her bid for governor, Schmidt touted recovering $145 million and counting for Kansas families and reducing the cost of doing business by over $75 million.
The 69-year-old Schmidt went through breast cancer surgery and radiation treatments. She said in October 2023 that she is cancer-free.
Schmidt is one of at least seven Republications candidates to run for governor in 2026.
