74% of Nation’s Top Insurance Companies Are Hiring

May 4, 2010

The insurance industry employment outlook for 2010 is guarded, but cautiously optimistic, according to a new survey that also revealed 74 percent of the nation’s top insurance companies are currently hiring.

“In fact, we found nine companies that indicated they will hire at least 2,000 employees in 2010, and 21 companies predicting they will hire more than 500 employees,” said Scott Kotroba, president and co-founder of GreatInsuranceJobs.com.

The survey results echo the conclusions of a National Association for Business Economics survey found that the outlook for employment was improving, with 37 percent of the 67 members who took part expecting to increase payrolls. Moreover, insurance employers are not cutting benefits to employees either, a San Diego Insurance Staffing poll indicated.

“The top insurance industry positions being hired in 2010 are insurance sales professionals, claims, underwriting, call center and IT. This is welcome news for anyone looking for an insurance job right now,” Kotroba said.

The “Insurance Industry 2010 Employment Outlook Survey” is the latest in a series of white papers by the insurance employment Web site, aimed at understanding how companies and job seekers alike are coping with rising unemployment in the insurance sector. The company spoke with 131 insurance entities nationwide — insurance companies, agents and brokers, third party administrators and managing general agents — to gauge this year’s employment outlook.

Nine companies that indicated they will hire at least 2,000 employees in 2010, and 21 companies predicted they will hire more than 500 employees. The top insurance industry positions being hired in 2010 are insurance sales professionals, claims, underwriting, call center and information technology.

The majority of insurance jobs open are found at property/casualty carriers, insurance brokers and agencies, third party administrators and managing general agents. The insurance jobs types that have multiple openings include insurance sales professionals, customer service, call center, administration, claims, underwriting and IT. Other jobs currently open include actuaries, data modelers, nurse case managers, product developers, premium auditors and account executives.

“Companies like Liberty Mutual, Travelers and InSphere Insurance Solutions have many jobs right now,” Kotroba added. Yet insurance employers indicated that qualified and quality candidates are still difficult to find. “Insurance HR departments are overworked, and are getting too many resumes for each open job. For jobseekers, finding a insurance job will still be challenging,” he said.

Social media recruiting is on the radar screen of 31 percent of the surveyed companies. Most insurance companies using social media to help recruit are mainly using LinkedIn, followed by Facebook. But most companies do not have a strategy for using either platform to recruit.

The 131 companies surveyed represent 377,321 employees, all of whom are based in the United States. The insurance sector employs 2.2 million people, so the survey represents 17 percent of all insurance sector employees, GreatInsuranceJobs said.
