Hondas that are 10 and 11-years old and even older Ford and Chevrolet pick-ups top the list of the most stolen vehicles in the U.S. in 2017.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released its annual Hot Wheels report, which identifies the most stolen vehicles in the United States based on vehicle theft data submitted by law enforcement to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
The vulnerability of older models to theft can be attributed to technology, or rather the lack of newer anti-theft technology in older vehicles. Honda Accords and Civics produced prior to the introduction of anti-theft technology continue to dominate this report.
NICB says the data demonstrates how effective anti-theft technology continues to be. A total of (6,707) 1998 Honda Civics were stolen in 2017 compared with just (388) 2017 Civics. Put another way, (17) 1998 Civics were stolen last year for every one 2017 model.
While technology helps, thousands of vehicles continue to be stolen each year because owners leave their keys or fobs in the vehicles, and that invites theft.
For 2017, the most stolen vehicles in the nation were:
Rank | Make/Model | Model year most stolen / (# thefts) |
