The Workers’ Health and Safety division of the Texas Workers’ Compensation Commission scheduled a one-day educational seminar on Workplace Violence Prevention for November 13, 2002 in Dallas.
The purpose of this program is to increase worker and employer awareness of the risk factors for workplace violence and to provide strategies for reducing exposure to these factors. Participants will receive information to help identify and respond to coworkers who may commit workplace violence, develop a workplace violence prevention policy, defuse angry people, and analyze elements of effective customer service.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Select, 10650 N. Central Expressway, Dallas. The cost is $90 per person. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
TWCC stated that workplace violence has emerged as an important safety issue in today’s workplace. Its most extreme form, homicide, is the third leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), there were 674 workplace homicides in 2000, accounting for 11 percent of the total 5,915 fatal work injuries in the United States. Texas in 2000 reported 101 workplace homicides, which account for 17 percent of the total 572 fatal work injuries.
