Louisiana Private Sector Sees Jobs Increases in June

July 29, 2009

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) has reported that the number of private sector jobs in Louisiana grew by 700 from May to June, led by increases in most major industry sectors.

The job gains were offset largely by a drop in education jobs at the end of school year, which pushed up the unemployment rate and resulted in an overall decline in the number of available nonfarm jobs. LWC Executive Director Tim Barfield said declines in education jobs are typically expected at this time of the year.

Not seasonally adjusted (NSA) nonfarm jobs in Louisiana declined by 1,800 from May to June 2009, bringing the total number of jobs in the state to 1,932,200. Over the year, the state experienced a drop of 14,800 nonfarm jobs mostly because of declines in the manufacturing sector.

Preliminary not seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment for June 2009 increased in the following sectors: construction, 141,100, up from 140,400 employed in May; trade, transportation, and utilities, 378,200, up from 377,700; information, 27,500, up from 27,000; professional and business services, 202,600, up from 201,700; leisure and hospitality, 199,800, up from 199,100; mining and logging (formerly natural resources and mining), 52,600, up from 52,300; and other services, 70,400, up from 69,800.

Preliminary not seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment decreased over the month in the following sectors: manufacturing, 144,500, down from 144,800; financial activities, 91,600, down 500 from May’s figure; education and health services, 257,100, down from 259,800; and government, 366,800, down 2,500 from last month. Nonfarm statistics are estimated from an employer-based sample survey by place of work.

Among the Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), the Alexandria and the Baton Rouge MSAs gained jobs over the month as each posted an increase of 300. Losses over the month in several of the MSA areas can be attributed to the seasonal decline in education payroll employment. The only MSA to show an over-the-year job increase was Baton Rouge where payrolls grew by 500.

Lafourche Parish had the lowest unemployment rate of 5.2 percent last month while West Carroll Parish had the highest rate at 17.0 percent.
