Louisiana State Police report nine traffic-related fatalities so far this year. Out of those seven of eight people who died in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing seat belts. A ninth fatality involved a motorcycle.
In a recent checkpoint in Calcasieu Parish, state police screened 2,083 vehicles for seat belt use. Troopers and deputies issued motorists a total of 65 citations, including 17 for no seat belt, five for improper or no child restraint, 25 for an expired motor vehicle inspection, one for no motor vehicle inspection, two for an expired license plate, eight for illegal window tint, two for no driver’s license in possession, four for driving under suspension, and one insurance violation.
Additionally, troopers arrested a man for resisting an officer by providing false information as well as theft and contempt of court warrants.
State police advise that wearing a seat belt is the easiest and most effective thing motorists can do to lessen the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed in a crash.
