Louisiana driver’s licenses still don’t comply with federal law, but the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has granted the state a temporary break.
That means travelers won’t need passports to fly within the United States, the American Press reports.
The Real ID Act of 2005 requires identification cards to meet standards to enter federal buildings or board commercial flights.
A 2008 state laws bars the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles from complying. The OMV’s director asked the federal government to recognize the state’s identification cards and cited the legal prohibition.
The Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly pushed back the compliance date, and agency Secretary Janet Napolitano had said she would no longer delay implementation, which would require travelers in noncompliant states to use passports for domestic flights.
