Texas State Fire Marshal Report: Fire Occurred Every 7 Minutes in 2014

December 8, 2015

In 2014, 957 fire departments in Texas reported 72,124 fires, with a fire occurring every seven minutes, 163 civilian fire deaths, 780 civilian fire injuries and $662,625,954 in property, according to a report from the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

In a letter announcing the latest report — Fires in Texas — based on the Texas Fire Incident Reporting System, State Fire Marshal Chris Connealy said the summary has been published for 33 years. (The entire report is posted below.)

The goal is to help Texas fire responders and other to “understand the fire problem and how it impacts our state and its citizens.” The report is based on data offered by participating fire departments that actively participate in TEXFIRS reporting.

The most frequently identified cause in all residential structure fires was cooking at 27 percent. Most fire-related civilian deaths — 67 percent — occurred in residential structure fires.

Three safety initiatives are incorporated in SFMO prevention efforts — We’re Out to Alarm Texas, Have an Exit Strategy and the Texas Fire Sprinkler Coalition, Connealy said.

The We’re Out to Alarm Texas program’s focus is the installation of smoke detectors in the homes of elderly and low income residents, those most vulnerable to fire loss.

The Have an Exit Strategy program urges Texans to practice fire escape planning by learning at least two ways out of any room or building.

The Texas Fire Sprinkler Coalition, comprised of the National Fire Protection Association and various Texas stakeholder groups, is dedicated to educating Texans on residential fire sprinklers.
