A tropical disturbance is expected to make landfall near the northern Gulf Coast Thursday afternoon, creating flash flooding conditions for parts of south-central Louisiana.
A moderate risk of excessive rainfall is in place along the south-central Gulf Coast of Louisiana, the National Weather Service (NWS) said, with four to six inches of rainfall expected. Some localized areas could see over 10 inches of rainfall.
The weather system, named Invest 93-L, will extend into Friday, with another slight risk for excessive rainfall along the central Gulf Coast and extending further north across central Louisiana and far eastern Texas as thunderstorm coverage expands inland, NWS said.
If the tropical rainstorm stalls over Louisiana later this week, AccuWeather hurricane experts say there may be a larger and more widespread flash flooding risk.
“We expect serious flooding issues regardless, even if does not get an official name designation,” AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva said.
The Louisiana Department of Insurance is encouraging residents to prepare for possible flooding this week by building an emergency kit and considering purchasing materials to board up windows and make temporary repairs to homes.
Residents have an obligation to mitigate further damage by making temporary repairs like putting a tarp over a damaged roof or boarding up a broken window.
“Residents should stay informed and take necessary precautions including protecting your property by clearing gutters and storm drains, securing valuables and having an emergency plan in place,” Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said. “Be InsuranceReady by reviewing your homeowners and flood polices now, discussing potential out-of-pocket costs with your agent and keeping your insurance information handy in case you need to file a claim.”
Homeowners should copies of their insurance policies and their agent’s contact information ready to go in case of an emergency evacuation.
