The Louisiana Department of Insurance announced it is in the process of drafting new rules on premium discounts for homes that meet some of the toughest wind-resistant construction standards.
A statute approved by Louisiana lawmakers in 2023 mandates that homeowner insurance carriers provide premium discounts for homes that are upgraded or constructed to the FORTIFIED standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. The FORTIFIED construction materials and techniques are often found to be more stringent than many state and local building codes.
Premium discounts should be in the range of 20% to 30%, reads Regulation 136, which covers other aspects of how the discounts can be applied for and implemented.
LDI is accepting written comments on the rules. Comments can be mailed to: Philip Dominique, Staff Attorney, Louisiana Department of Insurance, P.O. Box 94214, Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9214; or by fax to (225) 342-6704; or by mail to regulations@ldi.la.gov. Comments will be accepted through 4:30 p.m., Nov. 10.
