With more than a month left in the hurricane season, folks in Florida shouldn’t be surprised that someone is once again knocking on their door.
Tropical Storm Tammy gained formation Wednesday off Florida’s east coast, moving forecasters to issue warnings from Cocoa Beach north to South Santee River, South Carolina.
At 7:30 a.m. ET, Tammy was situated some 20 miles east of Cape Canaveral, Florida, and approximately 155 miles south-southeast of Jacksonville, according to the National Hurricane Center. Maximum sustained winds were reported near 40 mph with higher gusts, and the storm was moving in a north-northwest direction near 16 mph.
According to the NHC, heavy rains from Tammy could result in 3 to 5 inches of rainfall in parts of northern Florida, southeastern Georgia, eastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina. Officials at this time said it is unlikely the storm will maximize into a hurricane.
