National Weather Service says Alabama at High Risk for Wildfires

National Weather Service forecasters and officials with the Alabama Forestry Commission say Alabama is at an unusually high risk for wildfires, despite a cold snap.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for much of the southern part of the state because of the fire risk.

Colleen Vansant, a spokeswoman for the Alabama Forestry Commission, said Monday the warning is for all but the extreme northern and western areas of the state. She says the front that brought cold temperatures to the state also brought very low humidity.

The state has been suffering from a lack of rainfall for months. Coupled with the low humidity Monday, the threat of wildfires is high across much of the state, forecasters said.
