Aflac Expands Presence in South Carolina

September 15, 2010

South Carolina’s governor, Mark Sanford, and its insurance commissioner, Scott Richardson, were both in Columbia this week to help Aflac Group Insurance announce a major expansion of the Group’s presence in the city.

Aflac Group Insurance has leased another 27,000 square feet of office space in Columbia, at a second, new location in the city, and that space will permit the company to double its staff, the government and Aflac officials said.

The lease on the new space is for seven years, and over the next three years to five years the company intends to add at least another 100 employees to the staff of 160 employees already there.

Aflac Group Insurance came to Columbia last year when parent corporation Aflac Inc. bought Continental American Insurance Inc. for $100 million and renamed it. Columbia is a five hour drive from Aflac Inc. headquarters in Columbus, Ga. Continental was the first company Aflac has ever bought.

Continental’s business was in providing supplemental, voluntary, health and disability insurance to worksite groups. Up until the purchase, Aflac had concentrated on marketing policies to individuals.
